A blog about fly fishing and fly tying. Mostly for brown trout and pike but a few other species every now and again too. I intend to cover a lot of different “how to” type of things too. As well as fly tying instructions for some of my most successful fly patterns.
This fly was created by Canon Greenwell in 1860. It is still as popular today as it ever was. This fly has stood the test of time for a very good reason; it works and it works well! This is a fly no river trout angler should be without.
The Large Dark Olive (L.D.O.) is one of the first flies to hatch on the river in spring. Often you can get L.D.O.s hatching on the opening day of the new season if the weather is mild enough. Other times it can be as late as April before they start hatching. Weather conditions will dictate when they start hatching. It is the most important fly for the dry fly angler for the months of March and April and again in September. A must have fly for any dry fly angler in Ireland or the UK.
This fly imitates the Red Spinner which is the female spinner of the large dark olive who returns to the river to lay her eggs in the evening. A very useful fly for May, June and early July.
